“Piper wakes up screaming, or doesn’t go to sleep at all
and instead cries the entire night.”
Or,
“Dad is so sleepy that he does something stupid like heats the milk too much and somehow hurts Piper and has to tell Courtney who will be sorely disappointed.”
But even when I thought about those things, I realized that they are still the worst case scenario even when Courtney is around. So really, there wasn’t much to fear. Whatever happens will happen and Piper and I will deal with it. If work sucks the next day…so be it. It wouldn’t be the first time work has sucked and certainly wouldn’t be the last. Also, nine times out of ten I’m awake when Courtney gets up to get Piper in the middle of the night, so It’s not like I’ve never woken up at an ungodly hour before.
So then the day came and Courtney was off in the wee hours of the a.m. to NYC to gallivant around and live a glamorous life of a creative person in fashion. Piper did her best to throw me a curve ball, but all it did was make me laugh. When I was getting her dressed for the morning, I removed her diaper to reveal very little, only pee. So I strapped on a new diaper and before I could even grab her outfit she pooped. No problem, just grab another diaper. Check…old diaper off, new diaper on-nope! Pooped again half way through putting the new diaper on. So I laughed…again, and then I asked her “are you finished?” She just smiled up at me so I took that as a yes. Diaper number 2 off, and diaper number 3 on. Success! Now for the onesie and her pa…nope pooped yet again. Everything off, clean, clean, clean and then on with the final diaper. Good one Pi…good one.
Going to school was fine, no drama at all. So I left work a little early to pick Piper because the weather was fantastic outside for March and going on an evening walk had been the norm for a few days now, followed by a nap, then eat, play and bed time. I snapped a few funny pictures and sent them to Court and the rest of the plan went without a hitch. We took a nice long walk, followed by a good nap, a bottle, play time, bath time, story time, and then finally bed time. Piper cried for about 15 minutes when I put her to bed but after that not a peep. I talked to Court on the phone and she did the quick math informing that Piper should be up around 1 am that night. Cool. That’s totally manageable.
So I went to bed around 10:00 pm and woke up at… 4 am! What? That means that Piper had been sleeping for 9 straight hours! That’s incredible for her. It also meant that I got a solid 6 hours before I had to wake up. She cried quite a bit while I prepared a bottle and man was she hungry. There was no fooling around with this bottle...she was all business. She took down 4 ounces in about 13 minutes. She chugged it! But the whole time she looked at me with these huge eyes that said, “You’re not Mom and I don’t like that, but I’m going to eat anyway because I’m starving.” I laid her back down once she was finished shot gunning mom’s milk and after about 15 minutes of crying she was dead asleep and remained that way until 7:15 am. Perfect.
Piper didn’t poop 3 times that morning so that made things a lot easier. We did however have some difficulties finding a suitable (read: cute) outfit. It would seem that we have a lack of summertime weather clothing for our adorable little nugget. So she got a shirt that says I love grandma and some grey sweats. Simple and (somewhat) cute. Then it was off to school, cruise through a day of work, and then keep little Miss Piper occupied while Court raced home to feed her because her giant boobs hurt.
All in all, I would say the time we spent together was a great success. The real key was the beautiful weather. I was able to take a walk with Piper both nights that Court was gone and that was a huge help in giving us something to do together that was fun and tiring. I’m glad I only have to go at it alone every once in a while. Having Courtney around is a blessing that I don’t deserve and one that I hope I never take for granted.
