Just like the old days

One of the only nice things about working on a Sunday is that it allows you a bonus (i.e. very much earned) day off later in the week. So when I had to put in some weekend time to help shoot a training video for stores, I knew my effort would be rewarded with a weekday free to do as I please. And what better way to spend an unexpected day off than with my favorite baby?

Fridays are typically the comp day if choice, but as much as I love a long weekend, I thought it would be even better to take advantage if the rare opportunity for a midweek break. I decided to take a Wednesday, and recreate some of the stay-at-home magic I had a taste of for the first four months of Piper's life.

During my maternity leave, Wednesdays were notable because it was the only day I had actual plans. Every week at 10:30, barring some sort of baby catastrophe, we'd head out to yoga class. That regular outing became the thing I looked forward to, and my increasing success at getting us both dressed and out of the house- on a schedule- proved to myself I really was making progress at the whole mom thing.

So as I reentered the SAHM world for a day after a month and a half of juggling work AND baby care, I figured I was prepped for a day on easy street. I'd get to go to yoga, hang out with a friend, hit up the grocery store and probably even take a nap!

Oh how quickly I forgot the reality of an entire day with a baby. By 11:30 I was already texting Dustin: "I forgot my yoga mat, and diapers. then she threw up on her shirt. And didn't want to be put down during yoga. Currently wailing in the backseat. It is indeed just like old times."

Despite my rookie mistake of forgetting pretty much the only two necessary items for my day, we did have an ok time. We did an emergency Target run, enjoyed lunch with a friend (though it did overlap with Piper's naptime, so part of it was spent strapping her in the Ergo and lulling her to sleep), and we managed to squeeze in a trip to Giant Eagle, PLUS whip up a quick dinner before I had to rush to my evening dance class. I was proud of what I was able to accomplish, not just because it's nice to have a productive day, but because I remember a time that even getting out of bed was an accomplishment. But as far as I have come, dealing with a baby is still hard work. I tried to relish a rare mommy-daughter day, but as much fun as Piper is, she still wears me out. Turns out some things may never change.
