Chompers

Friday April 27th, one week shy of six months old...Piper got teeth. Well, that's when I first saw them anyway. We were playing in her room and all of a sudden I caught a glimpse of two little pearly whites sticking out of her bottom gum. They were already pretty much through, though they are still pretty small. But our tough little girl never made a peep about their appearance. I expected some crankiness, or even a fever, but aside from the crazy drooling, and constant gnawing on her hands/toys/blankets/anything she can reach teething has been a non event.

My main fear was that the arrival of teeth would mean the end of breastfeeding, or at least the end of feeding without biting and pain, but we're working through it ok so far. Over the weekend I did get a few bites, but I actually blame her cold more than her teeth. She's so stuffy it's hard for her to breath and drink at the same time, which means she's pulling off and relatching much more than usual. Plus, I don't think she even knows she has teeth, so when she gets lazy and sleepy and bites down she doesn't understand that it hurts!

Despite the occasional pain while we work through this new obstacle, I'm kind of excited for this milestone...she's growing so fast, and will even start eating real food soon! But another part of me isn't so thrilled. I adore her little gummy grin, and these first two teeth are a sign she'll only be my baby for a short time. But seeing her happy in any form is pretty addictive, so I'll gladly accept her new little smile- baby dragon teeth and all.
